Buccaneer who sacked Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl LV signs with division rival
James Lang-USA TODAY Sports

It appears as though a veteran Buccaneer is heading north to join former Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Dave Canales in Charlotte.

OLB Cam Gill is reportedly signing with the Panthers, per Fox Sports NFC South writer Greg Auman.

Gill signed with the Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 NFL Draft.  He was an active member of the Buccaneers' special teams unit during his time there, where he logged the majority of his snaps.  Over his three years on the field with the Bucs, he totaled 29 tackles and 2.5 sacks over 40 games.  He missed the 2022 season with a foot injury.

However, it was in the biggest game of his life where Gill is best known.  With the Bucs leading the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 with just five minutes left in Super Bowl LV, Gill and Ndamukong Suh got free and crunched quarterback Patrick Mahomes for a sack.  Gill got in a good shot on the Chiefs' superstar at close to a full sprint.

Now, Gill will hope to play more of a role with the Panthers.  There could be an opportunity there for Gill to see the field more than he was in Tampa.  The Panthers tagged and later traded away franchise edge rusher Brian Burns to the New York Giants.

However, there are plenty of other new faces competing for reps now with Gill.  The Panthers signed a number of edge rushers earlier this offseason, including journeyman Jadeveon Clowney, former Jaguars first-round pick K'Lavon Chaisson, and former Vikings fourth-round pick D.J. Wonnum.

Gill has a decent shot of sticking with the Panthers at least in a rotational role, where he would get to face his former team twice a year.  Regardless, Buccaneer fans are thankful for the memory he and his teammates helped create on February 7, 2021.
